The Princess Bride is the ultimate “chick flick” as far as I am concerned. But, as a priest, one of the funniest scenes is the marriage scene with the eccentric bishop. He says:
“Mawage. Mawage is wot bwings us togeder tooday. Mawage, that bwessed awangment, that dweam wifin a dweam… And wuv, tru wuv, will fowow you foweva… So tweasure your wuv.”
For all the fun that we make of that bishop, yet, he is correct. Marriage is a blessed arrangement. It was instituted of God at the time of the Creation and it formed part of God’s plan for the Earth to be fruitful and multiply. Nevertheless, it is important to point out that this is not how marriage began. Marriage began because it was not good for man to be alone, and he needed a companion by his side. It is important because the Orthodox do not say that THE purpose of marriage was to procreate, but rather that companionship was the first reason for marriage from the beginning.
At its romantic best, in a sense marriage is a dream within a dream. It was in a dream that God removed the rib from Adam and made Eve. And marriage is the fullfillment of the dream of companionship, the dream within the dream.
So, I have to give it to the bishop. He had some good things going for him, in spite of his eccentric accent.
And, oh, yes, I cannot leave without saying:
Inigo Montoya: Hello! My name is Inigo Montoya! You killed my father! Prepare to die!
Count Rugen: Stop saying that!
Inigo Montoya: HELLO! MY NAME IS INIGO MONTOYA! YOU KILLED MY FATHER! PREPARE TO DIE!
