This is to honor a large group of civilians who were never properly honored. We remember the police and firemen of 09/11. Most of us are not aware that the largest maritime evacuation in history took place on 09/11. It is estimated by the Coast Guard that over 500,000 people were evacuated by Coast Guard, commercial, and private boats from the south side of Manhattan. Access north was closed by the debris and giant dust clouds. In ONE day, more people were evacuated than in the nine days of the evacuation of Dunkirk at the beginning of World War II. Churchill called Dunkirk a miracle. We have largely not known about this part of the history. The video above is narrated by Tom Hanks, a well known actor, but also a chronicler of the heroism present among many common people.
