María Conchita Alonso is a Cuban-born singer / actress who was raised in Venezuela. She has won a couple of Grammy awards and had some gold albums back in the early 1980’s. By the mid-1980’s she entered into films, and you might have seen her back then in Moscow on the Hudson. Recently, she had to resign from her role, with the producer even saying:
“We really cannot have her in the show, unfortunately … Doing what she is doing is against what we believe.”
What was she doing that was so horrible? Was she caught with drugs on her? Did she drive a car at near 100 mph speed while under the influence, as a teenage pop singer just did this week? Did it turn out that she was engaged in some felony-level criminal activity?
No, actually, in the star-crazy world of Hollywood, those are all actually acceptable. So, what was her grave sin? She supports a Tea Party candidate for the governorship of California. And, because she openly supports him and has appeared with him in a commercial, she has lost her job, probably without recourse, since theatre productions are pretty much immune from job-related actions.
This is the liberal craziness that does really go on in some circles. Hollywood is to extreme liberalism as Sheriff Joe Arpaio is to Tea Party extremism. Both are clearly wrong and both cause damage to American democracy. In case you are interested, below is the offending commercial.

Crazy!

The commercial is a piece of genius. Having her lecture him about animal rights gives it a sense that this guy might appeal to a wide spectrum, if he can still keep her loyalty.
I’m not fond of the tea party. But the commercial is terrific, and her employers are crazy to fire her. In the long run though, that may help Donnely’s campaign—something like the Duck Dynasty flap bringing more attention to the show.
