As I am searching through the web, I have realized that there are quite a few pieces of art out there that imagine Calvin grown up. A type of mini-canon has developed. That is, most of the art assumes that Calvin and Susie fall in love and get married. They have a daughter, and her name is Bacon, after Sir Francis Bacon, the philosopher.
Interestingly enough, this mini-canon uniformly assumes that warped Calvin grows up to be a loving, caring father. In one sense, all of Hobbes’ input into Calvin’s life is successful. He has successfully trained up a child in the way he should go. I do find it a tad difficult to imagine that Bacon is this goody-goody child. This is the only place with which I disagree with this mini-canon. An edgy Christian-friendly comic has been changed by the mini-canon into a bit of a treacly comic. Somehow, I would expect that the child of Calvin and Susie would be a bit of a firebrand in her own right.
Nevertheless, I can definitely imagine Calvin and Susie falling in love and Calvin turning out to be a bit of a softie as regards his daughter. I know that I am a softie as regards our daughters. But, I will say that all of our daughters had rather spicy personalities as they were growing up. People with spicy personalities, such as Calvin and Susie, would tend to have a daughter with a rather spicy personality.
I can most certainly imagine Calvin passing Hobbes on to Bacon and encouraging her imagination. It would be my hope that our daughters have all inherited a fair bit of imaginative and creative thinking. But, I think that Hobbes would have his work cut out for him every bit as much with Bacon as he had with Calvin. You see, a guardian angel often has his work cut out for him. And, I have come to suspect that Hobbes was actually a guardian angel assigned to Calvin and now to Bacon.
