I am a groupie. Yes, I admit it. I am a groupie. Yesterday some of my groupie fantasies were fulfilled. I was present at the ground breaking ceremony for a new building at Saint Katherine Greek Orthodox Church in Melbourne, Florida, USA. Present there was a man whom I highly admire, His Grace Demetrios, Bishop of Xanthus of the Greek Orthodox Church in the USA. Why do I say that I am his groupie?
Well, it was Bishop Demetrios who began the Orthodox Christian Mission Center in St. Augustine, Florida. As a person who was an overseas missionary and is now a domestic missionary, His Grace, Bishop Demetrios is my hero. Yes, I am a Bishop Demetrios groupie. So, this post has nothing theological in it, nothing orthopractical. It has only my deep appreciation for a man who had a dream that the Orthodox could return to their missionary history and reach out to those who needed to know God. Thanks be to God for Bishop Demetrios.

It”s all right for an Orthodox priest to be a groupie of an Orthodox bishop or other esteemed theologian.
If an Orthodox priest becomes a groupie of a popular Hollywood person, then I have my uncertainty of that priest’s effectiveness.
