Well, I think I have all the widgets restored. However, to my dismay, over 50% of the posts + comments show some minor corruption. There is no way to fix it other than going over every post and comment individually, something I do not have time to do. As best I can tell, it is almost as though the database program update by the company that hosts this blog converted all my posts from ANSI to ASCII characters then back to ANSI. Sadly, this means that posts containing any of several ANSI characters translated into gibberish characters in ASCII. So, posts older than the first week of June are simply going to have to retain their corruption. This is most upsetting! Worse, any posts that have any Greek words in them have turned the Greek into gibberish. AARRGGGHH

If it’s any comfort, I don’t think it’s a DB issue w/ our host. I was dealing with the same issue in widget land last night trying to spell Sarx. (ΣΑΡΞ) in ANSI instead of ASCII. Despite all recent upgrades to internet, ASCII is still the preferred usage. My experience is that ANSI is only so-so supported in nearly all cases – and even then usually only in superficial, aesthetic ways.

Lo – I just spelled σαρξ in ascii and all is well.

Sorry to hear about all that you lost on your blog. 🙁 I know how I'd feel if I lost all my stuff! Since joining facebook, I have tried to put everything in both places — my blog and my facebook notes so that I have them 2 places. Hope you had some kind of backup or hard copies….
