Father Orthoduck saw this cartoon today and thought that it expressed very nicely some people’s thought pattern. This is the famous, “I don’t think of God until I am in trouble” thought pattern. And, if God does not answer the prayer, then they take that as proof that God does not really care. A variation of the theme above is when someone who has ignored God is in personal trouble and comes sobbing to God, or, even worse, utters that infamous phrase, “How could God let that happen?” as though God’s job description is to ensure serenity of life even for people who have been roundly ignoring Him.
But, an amazing thing about God is how often He responds to prayers of that type and reaches out to the person in need. They may not be freed from their trouble or they may be. But, either way, they will often know that God has reached out to touch them, and will have a sense of God’s presence. The person may or may not subsequently respond to God. But, they will have within them the memory of a God who responded to them in their need.
John 3:16 – For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
2 Peter 3:9 – The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
