Father Orthoduck found the above comic to be a most apt commentary on why newspapers fail. There are even good statistics showing the effects of the newspaper sensationalization of the news on the average person in America. For instance, ask yourself, are you more likely to get murdered or raped or burglared today or twenty years ago? Most polling interviews show that the average American believes himself/herself to be in more danger today than they were twenty years ago. But, what do the national crime statistics show? Well, you might be surprised!
Type of crime |
1990 | 2007 |
Murder | 24,700 | 16,929 |
Forcible Rape | 102,560 | 90,427 |
Burglary | 3,073,900 | 2,176,140 |
So, why do we feel less safe, if the statistics show that we are more safe? Think about it mathematically. We have millions more people in America in 2007 than we did in 1990. Despite that, the crime rate has gone down. So, why do you feel less safe? Certainly, one clear indicator of why you feel less safe has been the decay of the news media from reporting the news to sensationalizing the news. You are actually safer today than you were twenty-seven years ago.
But, don’t let the news media catch you saying that!
