Have you ever had one of those days where it seems as though the words in your mouth as you go to sleep are the simple prayer, “Please Lord, do not let me repeat today!”?
Well, yesterday was certainly one of those days for me. I am on a trip to one of my diocese’s required meetings in Pensacola, FL. I decided to take off a couple of days early in order to be able to visit our daughters–two out of three–and our grandchildren in Birmingham. Today was the last day of the visit and we were planning to spend the day mall hopping, eating out, watching a movie, and generally hanging around and enjoying each others company. However, it did not work out that way. We actually did nothing except eating out and even that did not go fully well.
- Over the last few days, my sinuses have been behaving worse and worse. Finally, the day before yesterday I had to tell my daughters that I would appreciate going to a call-in clinic yesterday. So, I went to the clinic yesterday, and, after evaluation, had blood drawn and x-rays were taken. Hmm, except the phlebotomist muffed drawing the blood twice, so I have some interesting bruises on my arm. Well, it turns out that I have a serious sinus infection and they had to give me two shots, an antibiotic and a steroid. And, I now have two nice prescriptions for more antibiotics and steroids.
- So, we spent some time together in the afternoon, then returned to our cars. Oops, somehow a nail had become stuck in the tire of one of our daughter’s cars. So, now I went to buy one of those inflating cans, put it in the tire, and then we went to get the tire fixed.
- OK, no problem, so our day was gone. Nothing bad had happened. One of the daughters went to pick up the grandchildren from school and the other took me to my car. I went to the motel, dropped off some stuff, and started the drive to one of the daughters’ homes for supper. Too bad it was night, and that the deer were running. I found out the deer were running when I hit the one that jumped in front of our SUV. The policeman who took the report was very friendly and commented that this tends to happen at this time of the year in this part of Alabama. The insurance company was very friendly. And, most important, the front end damage was milder than it could have been, and the car is drivable.
- Unfortunately, just last week I had to put $1200 some dollars worth of work into the car. And, to save money I have a $500 deductible. This is a hard hit on our family economy, which we do not need at this time.
- So, we finally went to supper with the grandchildren. They enjoyed looking at the deer hair in the grill. Our daughters were mainly white-faced and happy that their papá was not hurt. And the grandchildren wanted to go to Burger King. So, we went to Burger King, had supper. I got to play with the grandchildren and bid our daughters goodbye. I found myself glancing back. They even called me at the motel to make sure I had arrived safe.
And so, I am up later than I planned, writing this entry for posting, and thankful for God’s mercy. Do thank the Lord with me and pray for our finances. Finally, am I ever glad that yesterday is over! Please Lord, do not let me repeat a day as “interesting” as yesterday any time soon!

May the Lord continue to provide for you all in His abundant grace and mercy. May your cup overflow with His goodness and love.
