Signs of the time for the debate: My wife walked in and remained five minutes then walked out again and said she still did not want to hear the debates. And, the moderator is almost sighing as he goes on to another question because of his growing frustration.
As NAFTA was being discussed, it appeared that the debate was slowly returning to a debate. But, as Sen. McCain began to answer the question, he immediately returned to slamming Sen. Obama. This time he was accusing Sen. Obama of wanting to cancel the treaties with our best customer, Colombia, while speaking freely with our “worst” enemy down there, Venezuela. More and more accusations.
The debate has gone on to health care. Sen. Obama did a fine job of describing his health plan. Sen. McCain made smarmy remarks about how Sen. Obama was going to fine small businesses and fully socialize health care. Wonder of wonders, the moderator actually and finally interrupted Sen. McCain (because his time was up) and passed it on to Sen. Obama while Sen. McCain was still talking. Meanwhile, my wife passed by, heard some of the words and made a smarmy remark about the debate and walked out again. She is a registered independent, so this does not bode well for Sen. McCain.
After Sen. Obama’s rebuttal, Sen. McCain has returned to this mythical Joe figure who is being told that Sen. Obama will tax him, fine him, keep him away from the health plan he wants, and take all choice away from him. In fact, he is actually doing little answering of Sen. Obama’s rebuttal. It is simply mud-slinging. It is rather obvious that he hopes some of it will stick. Ohhh, the moderator just interrupted Sen. McCain again and passed it back to Sen. Obama for the final mini-rebuttal.
Hmm, the moderator has brought up abortion. They asked him what type of judges he would appoint. He said that he would choose judges based on their qualification, not on any litmus test. While he said that being pro Roe vs Wade might be a point against it, he would impose no litmus test. Nevertheless, he had to take a dig at Sen. Obama for voting against two of the judges calling it ideological voting. Does this mean that if you vote against a Presidential appointee, then you are automatically an ideologist?
Sen. Obama was quick to bring up a non-abortion example in which he and Sen. McCain had voted in two different ways on overturning a Supreme Court decision saying that while he disagreed, it was not an ideological decision.
