Well, the first ten minutes were almost as complete a waste as the five minutes I saw of the first half hour. It was an unending set of attacks by Sen. McCain. He was smiling politely while insisting that the country needed to know why he associated with a terrorist. I note that he did not say a former terrorist. He gave the man no credit for having served his time and being an university professor. Nor would he even acknowledge that there were Republicans present in the same committee on which Sen. Obama served. In fact, where I to take Sen. McCain seriously, it would worry me for he seems to be saying that if you have ever associated with a person who has ever been a criminal, then you yourself are tainted. I found myself wondering how many degrees of separation would be necessary before Sen. McCain would stop going after me. It was a rather frightening argument in some ways as it echoes with McCarthyism.
Sen. Obama kept trying to answer him with facts. He finally started to retreat from the tit for tat and tried to bring the debate back to the nation. But, he was unable to do so because of the constant and unending stream of charges and innuendos.
The subject has shifted to NAFTA. There is finally some semblance of a real debate. We are starting to hear some semblance of policy from Sen. McCain. But, he continues with a constant charge after charge.
